Bio Monitoring with the Help of a Bee Project at Hamburg Airport
Background of the Bee Project
Plants are able to absorb air, water or soil, passing it on to bees via nectar and pollen. Colonies of bees work their areas intensively, covering an approximate area of up to 2km².
The products created from this are examined for pollutants by an independent laboratory. Environmental biologists are able to asses the environmental conditions of the area of the harvest from the results.
The bee itself works as a “bio filter” so to speak.
As early as 1999, the Flughafen Hamburg GmbH began this form of bio-monitoring at the location of Hamburg.
From the end of April until the beginning of July, beehives (12 colonies) will be set up on site and at a comparative location in Büchen in the south-east of Schleswig-Holstein.

In 2008, the spring and summer harvests collected a total of 592 glasses of airport honey. This is approx. 148kg, i.e. 74l of honey.
