Hamburg Airport stays on course - Profit achieved despite difficult economic environment

Despite the difficult economic situation, Hamburg Airport closed the financial year 2009 with a profit of 35.0 million euros; the previous year’s result was 39 million euros. 12.23 million passengers used Hamburg Airport in 2009, in comparison to 12.84 million passengers in 2008. Turnover for the year was 224.1 million euros (2008: 230.7 million euros).

"We have managed to hold our course in 2009, generating a satisfying profit in a difficult year," said Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport, at the Financial Results Press Conference. "Hamburg Airport offers its passengers a broad and stable route network along with a high measure of service and comfort. For our staff, we are a dependable employer; for our customers, we are a reliable partner. In 2010, we will be continuing down this route and increasing thrust once again. Traffic figures already recovered in November and December 2009. The first quarter of 2010 brought with it 5.8 percent growth in passenger numbers. And so, we are looking ahead with cautious optimism."

12.23 million passengers used Hamburg Airport in 2009. Compared to 2008, when 12.84 million passengers took off from or landed in Hamburg, this represents a decline of 4.7 percent. Traffic recovered slowly in the course of the year. Whilst the airport recorded a decrease in passenger numbers of 9.6 percent in the first quarter, the fourth quarter saw a return to positive figures with 3.2 percent growth. There were increases in both seats per flight (up 3.8 percent to 124) and passengers per flight (up 4 percent to 90).

The airfreight sector also felt the effects of the weak economy, with air cargo transshipped at Hamburg Airport, excluding airmail and transit, declining by 16.8 percent to 64,400 tonnes. Flown air cargo sank by 9.6 percent, whilst truck transshipment declined 22.6 per cent.

2009: HAM 21 Expansion Programme completed

With the opening of the P2-P4 parking deck and the Radisson Blu Airport Hotel, Hamburg Airport’s HAM 21 Expansion Programme has been completed. The year 2009 saw Hamburg Airport invest a total of 35 million euros in increased comfort and service for its passengers. Hamburg Airport is also a dependable partner for its staff: the number of employees remained constant. Michael Eggenschwiler: “With a combination of several measures we were able to secure our result. Using up carried over vacation entitlement, time off in lieu of overtime, a conditional hiring freeze, reduction in material expenditure and subjecting new projects to intense scrutiny are just a few examples of measures that we have successfully implemented in cooperation with our employees.”

Outlook for 2010: Hamburg Airport is cautiously optimistic

Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO at Hamburg Airport, foresees a mild recovery for the aviation industry in 2010. "Mobility has become a basic need in our modern society; industry studies show that recovery and growth phases quickly follow difficult periods in the aviation industry. For 2010, we are expecting moderate growth in passenger numbers of around 3 percent. We are a fair partner for the airlines, securing the diversity and quality of the route network. Hamburg Airport is well-equipped for the challenges of the future, with two state-of-the-art terminals, the Airport Plaza as a world of experiences for passengers, and the S-Bahn (metro rail network) connection. Every day, our friendly and highly qualified personnel dedicate themselves to satisfying our passengers, from the moment they arrive at the airport until take-off."
