- Hamburg Airport - always worth a visit, with or without a ticket
Northern Germany’s gateway to the world: Hamburg Airport is the largest international commercial airport in northern Germany. Around 29,250 passengers from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Lower Pomerania use the airport every day on their way for business or holiday travel. Around 60 per cent of Hamburg Airport’s passengers travel for private reasons, whilst 40 per cent are travelling on business. Passengers landing in Hamburg can reach the city centre very quickly, as the airport is only 8.5 kilometres from the city centre.
Large choice of routes: Hamburg Airport has a full range of services
Hamburg Airport’s catchment area includes more than 4 million people, making it extremely attractive for many airlines. Around 70 carriers fly from Hamburg to 120 destinations in 39 countries. Of these 70 airlines, ten are classical low-cost carriers. Hamburg Airport’s route network offers a healthy mix of traditional and low-cost destinations. Last year, one in every five passengers using Hamburg Airport flew with a low-cost airline. The traditional, established airlines also offer flights for under 100 euros, so that there is a total of around 70 budget destinations to choose from. The list runs from A (Amsterdam, Antalya, Alicante) to M (Malaga, Madrid, Munich) to Z (Zagreb, Zurich).
Extensively linking northern Germany to the core regions and cities of Europe is Hamburg Airport's great strength. The spectrum of destinations is diverse. For both business and private travellers, the airport offers a large number of attractive direct connections. Daily flights to Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, London, Barcelona and many other metropolises link Hamburg with the most important cities of Europe.
Flights to the Baltic as well as to Scandinavia are a particular focus of the network. Direct flights to Helsinki, Kiev, Copenhagen, Krakow, Moscow, Oslo, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn, Vilnius and Warsaw reinforce Hamburg Airport's status as a gateway to northern and eastern Europe.
Long-haul routes link Hamburg with the whole world
On 1 March 2006, Hamburg Airport opened its gateway to the world even further with the commencement of Emirates’ daily direct flights to Dubai. The award-winning airline’s Dubai hub provides optimal connections to Asia, Africa, the Far East and Australia.
Continental Airlines’ daily non-stop service to New York has been in operation since 10 June 2005. In the Big Apple, passengers from Hamburg have a choice of more than 140 quick and comfortable direct connections to destinations throughout North, South and Central America.
And for passengers who would prefer to discover Toronto, the summer timetable includes non-stop flights to the Canadian metropolis with air transat.
Expansion programme: maximal passenger comfort
2005 was an important year for HAM 21, Hamburg Airport’s expansion programme. The centrepiece of the programme, the new Terminal 1, opened its doors in May and has been delighting both passengers and visitors ever since. Last year also saw the new parking guidance system come into operation, and wider access and exit roads in front of the terminals make the airport much easier for those travelling by car.
The underground metropolitan rail station in the airport, already completed, will be connected to the metropolitan rail network (S-Bahn and U-Bahn) in 2008. The rail connection will link the airport to the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) in just 23 minutes. A new passenger shopping plaza is being constructed between the terminals and will also be opened in 2008.
Promotion to the major league of European airports
Hamburg Airport has now joined the ranks of Europe’s major airports: in 2005, the airport registered around 10.7 million passengers. This represents a growth of 7.9 per cent over the previous year. This was the first time the airport had broken through the 10 million barrier, having narrowly missed out in the record years of 2000 and 2004, when 9.9 million passengers passed through the gates. This year, too, the airport is expecting a substantial upward trend in passenger figures. More than 11 million passengers are expected to use Hamburg Airport in 2006.
World of experiences and a paradise for shoppers
From clothing to souvenirs to books and magazines: around thirty shops at Hamburg Airport offer a wide range of services and shopping opportunities. And with more than thirty-five travel agencies and last-minute counters, Hamburg Airport maintains a leading position in the travel market. The shops, travel agencies, pharmacies and banks are open for business from early morning until late evening, seven days a week Numerous restaurants, snack bars and cafes create a unique atmosphere. Wherever you are in the airport, you can order a light snack or an outstanding meal. Passengers and visitors are equally welcome guests at Hamburg Airport. The bustle of activity on the apron can be followed from either of the two observation decks. A model show, the only one of its kind anywhere in the world, simulates air traffic at the airport. The model airport, built to a scale of 1:500, was specially constructed in 1956 for the World Expos in Vienna and Casablanca. The model was redesigned in 2001. More than 5,000 LEDs illuminate the airport buildings, runways and taxiways and the buildings in the vicinity. The world of experiences that Hamburg Airport offers its guests is rounded off by guided tours of the apron.
