Fiscal Year 2004: Hamburg Airport increases passenger numbers, turnover and profits

In fiscal year 2004, Hamburg Airport again successfully secured its position as Germany’s fifth-largest airport . The number of passengers at the Airport rose by 3.8% to 9.9 million. Turnover went up by 6.3% to €198.6 million. The Airport reported a net profit of €31.3 million (2003: €21.8 million). This is the second year running that Hamburg Airport has reported a rise in passenger numbers. “Hamburg Airport performed well in 2004 and generated a good, solid profit,” stated Michael Eggenschwiler, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Airport. “We are harvesting the fruits of the rapid introduction of our early-response restructuring strategy.”

Strict cost management and efficient organisation
The increased profits are the direct result of the good utilization of infrastructure capacities, strict cost management, efficient organisation procedures and the higher turnover reported by the Airport’s subsidiaries. Additionally, profits in 2004 were unaffected by unforeseen extraordinary expenditure, such as the damage to the access roads and restructuring costs which impaired turnover in 2003. The €350-million HAM 21 extension project continued to plan and it remains well within budget and the scheduled timeframe. “Flughafen Hamburg GmbH is funding the extension project completely under its own steam,” explained Michael Eggenschwiler. “The HAM 21 project is entirely driven by the Airport’s actual needs. The present terminal infrastructure reached the limits of its capacities some time ago.” The opening of the new Terminal 1 on May 25 and the closure of the two old Terminals 1 and 3 will give Hamburg Airport the facilities and capacity to handle up to 15 million passengers a year.

    Outlook for fiscal year 2005
Hamburg Airport Chairman Michael Eggenschwiler anticipates further recovery for the global aviation industry in 2005 and with it a substantial increase in traffic figures at Hamburg Airport. “As the global economy picks up momentum, we expect this to have a marked impact on business and leisure travel. Hamburg Airport confidently expects to handle over 10 million passengers in 2005. Our new, lean, effective corporate structure has further improved the company’s robust economic basis. Passengers can look forward to an even more attractive range of destinations, with the addition of three new long-distance services to Dubai, New York and Toronto.”
Hamburg Airport will become even more modern and convenient in 2005: on 25 May the centrepiece of the HAM 21 extension project, the new Terminal 1, opens its doors for business. The official opening of the new terminal on 25 May also heralds the introduction of new terminal numbers: the new terminal will be called Terminal 1, while the former Terminal 4 is to be renamed Terminal 2. All passenger handling services will be centralised in these two terminals, which both feature the same distinctive architectural style. Wide, spacious access roads  make it easier for motorists to get to the airport. Hamburg Airport has also made searching for a parking space an easier, less stressful experience. Launched on 15 April, a network of automated digital VMS parking signs located on all approach roads and on the Airport grounds now inform motorists how many free spaces are currently available in the terminal car parks and the off-airport holiday car parks.
