Middle East - Africa - Asia - Australia: Emirates adds Hamburg to Global Network - daily non-stop service to Dubai from winter 2005/06

    Forth gateway in Germany
New services from Hamburg to the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia. Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, will be offering a daily non-stop scheduled service from Hamburg to Dubai, a major trading hub in the Middle East. Henry Hasselbarth, Regional Manager North & Central Europe, announced on Tuesday in Hamburg that Emirates is to start a daily service to Hamburg on 30 October 2005. The good news for travellers from north Germany is that the airline offers scheduled flights to 77 cities in 54 countries on 5 continents from its international hub in Dubai. Hamburg will be the airline’s fourth gateway to Germany served by daily non-stop scheduled flights, joining Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf.

Henry Hasselbarth: "We are delighted to continue our European expansion by introducing a service from Hamburg. Our daily non-stop flight to Dubai will be the fastest connection from Germany’s maritime metropolis to one of the most important trading hubs in the Middle East, which is also rapidly becoming an exceptionally popular new holiday destination. Passengers travelling from Hamburg from Dubai also benefit from excellent connections to Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia. Particularly attractive to travellers from Germany are Emirates’ destinations in the Indian Ocean: Mauritius, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and, from January 2005, the Seychelles.”

The air freight division of Emirates occupies an important position within the Emirates Group. In business year 2003/2004, Emirates’ five freighters accounted for 30% (US $196 million) of the Group’s total air freight income. This figure has since risen by 42% to US $653 million, which is 20% of the Group’s operating revenues. Compared to the previous year, cargo tonnage has gone up by 26% to 660,000 tonnes. The Emirates SkyCargo network currently comprises 77 destinations in 54 countries on 5 continents. The airline services numerous key trade routes, which are also important passenger destinations. On 1 October 2004, this network was expanded to include Johannesburg and Lahore. The airline’s freight-only destinations are Budapest, Liege, Gothenburg, Amsterdam, Bangalore, Dalian and Taipei.

Starting on 30 October 2005, Emirates’ new daily service, operating under flight number EK 60, will depart from Hamburg Airport with an Airbus A330-200 at 15:35hrs local time and will arrive in Dubai at 00:45hrs local time. From Dubai to Hamburg flight number EK 59 will leave at 08:55hrs and touch down in Hamburg at 12:55hrs. The Dubai-based international airline is one of the world’s five most profitable airlines and among the 20 largest global carriers. Emirates is also one of the fastest growing airlines: by 2012 the airline’s fleet will have increased from the current 71 jets to 170 aircraft – including 10 Airbus A340-500 long-distance jets and 30 Boeing 777-300 jets. In 2006, the airline will take delivery of the first of a total of 45 Airbus A380 mega-liners that have been ordered.

In June of last year, Emirates placed the biggest aircraft order in history of civil aviation at the Paris Air Show. Emirates ordered 71 Boeings and Airbuses worth US $19 billion. The confirmed orders announced in Paris, along with those revealed at the Dubai Air Show two years ago, bring Emirates’ current total order book to US $26 billion. Emirates was the first airline to use the new long-distance Airbus 340-500 on 1 December 2003. The mega-liner is currently in service on Emirates’ flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and New York.

The airline was the world’s first carrier to order the double-decker Airbus A380 jet when it was launched in 2001. With a total order for 45 Airbus 380-800, including two freighters, due for delivery as from 2006, Emirates is also the biggest customer for the new super Airbus. “These orders are helping to create and secure thousands of jobs in Europe, and particularly at the Airbus plant in Finkenwerder,” stated Henry Hasselbarth.

Emirates is one of the five most profitable and 20 largest airlines in the world. The airline, which has received more than 250 awards for excellence since it was founded, flies to 77 cities in 54 countries and is the official partner of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ in Germany.

In Germany, Emirates currently flies twice daily non-stop from Frankfurt and Munich, and once daily non-stop from Düsseldorf to the airline’s international hub in Dubai. Emirates comprises Emirates SkyCargo, D&LM (Destination & Leisure Management), Emirates Holidays and Arabian Adventure, which owns the luxury hotel Al Maha Desert Resort. Emirates Airline is part of the Emirates Group, which owns a number of companies, including Dnata, Mercator, Transguard and Galileo.
