- A step closer to heaven: The new Terminal 2 - Figures - Data - Facts
Hamburg Airport has been experiencing dynamic growth for almost 20 years and serves as a hub of traffic for the whole of the northern German region. Despite fluctuations in the economy or structural changes to the market, one can expect that the long-term trend will be an increase in air traffic. With the extension programme HAM 2,1 Hamburg Airport is well prepared for forthcoming challenges.
For the construction of Terminal 2, a 9.5-meter deep excavation arose on an area measuring 11,700m2. A total of 105,000m3 earth was dugout to be able to start the terminal shell. Around 40,000 cubic meters of concrete, 400,000 building stones and 5500 tons of concrete steel have been used up until completion of the base construction in February.
For Terminal 2 and the Shopping Plaza, a 26,800m2 large seven-storey area will be converted. Altogether usable storey space of around 82,300 m2 will be made available. Of this, a total of 10,700 m2 will be used as office space, whilst shops and service units will take up an area of around 4,800 m2 and gastronomy spread over 4,900 m2. 70 new check-in counters and a high-tech baggage transport system will ensure that there is no unnecessary waiting even at peak times.
With the 260 meter extended pier, this results in a total length of 790 m within the framework of the south extension, that’s the size of almost two laps around a sport’s field. Six new finger positions with direct boarding and eight bus gates will ensure that passengers arrive at their destination even faster than before.
In spring 2005 the electricians, painters and plumbers will have also completed their last activities. That’s when Terminal 2 will open its gateway to the sky for its six to seven million passengers yearly.
