- Savely under wraps: The roof construction of the new Terminal 2
The first steel girder for the roof construction of the new Terminal 2 has arrived at Hamburg Airport. As long as a football pitch, as wide as a street and almost 6 meters high - those are the dimensions of the girders which, combined with steel and glass elements, will provide a bright, futuristic and spacious look and feel for the new terminal.
No journey is too far, or river to deep for HAM 21 for the roof of Terminal 2. The colossal girders come from Neumarkt in Oberpfalz, are brought to Hamburg on a ship and initially stored temporarily just north of the Elbe. The individual parts measuring up to 25 meters long and six meters wide are then transported to Hamburg Airport in pairs in lorries overnight. With dimensions of this magnitude, transportation of the steel girders is a huge logistical challenge – two lanes are occupied whilst the girders are driven to the building site under police escort.
The four individual parts are then put together on site on temporary scaffolding to build steel girders of around 100 meters long each. Using special casting elements and bearing bars, the load is then lowered down on to ready-prepared concrete supports.
With the special pipe construction in its large wingspan, the new Terminal will not only be an architectural highlight but also at the same time offer passengers an extraordinary world of experience. In fact Terminal 4, designed by the architects Gerkan, Marg and Partner (gmp), is hailed by architecture critics as an “airport cathedral permeated by light”. The new Terminal 2 follows the same clear architecture, is however somewhat more spacious in design. The construction of the roof is reminiscent of the shape of an aeroplane wing and allows the hall to shine in the daylight and - now and again - even in sunlight in Hamburg.
