Record: almost 12.8 million passengers in 2007

Hamburg Airport reports 6.9 Per Cent Passenger Growth

For Hamburg Airport, 2007 was once again a record year: between January and December 2007, around 12,780,000 passengers passed through the airport. That is some 6.9 per cent, or 826,000, more than in 2006. "With almost 12.8 million passengers and nearly 7 per cent growth, Hamburg Airport is growing above the national German average. 2007 was a very good year for the aviation industry, and the airlines are also reporting strong growth. The increased passenger figures would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of our airline partners and their trust in Hamburg as a strong location", explains Michael Eg-genschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport.

The 12 million passenger barrier was broken in 2007 for the first time in the airport's 97-year history. With 1.28 million passengers, October 2007 set a new record for the highest traffic figures ever seen in one month at Hamburg Airport. Alongside 20 new routes, the flourishing economy was the principal driving factor in the industry's growth in 2007, bringing expansion in all business areas. The average load factor increased from 72 to 73 per cent, despite the airlines having increased capacity by 6 per cent. Growth in annual aircraft movements was significantly lower than the growth in passenger movements: with around 173,500 take-offs and landings, aircraft movements grew only by 3 per cent over the previous year.

On average, around 35,000 passengers passed through Hamburg Airport every day in 2007, with around 240 take-offs and landings per day. Air cargo, too, is showing signs of growth: the airport achieved 9.3 per cent growth in 2007 to report a total of 84,500 tonnes of freight, in comparison to 77,307 tonnes the previous year.

    More Top Value Routes
In 2007, around 65 airlines offered direct flights from Hamburg to 120 destinations. In particular, Hamburg Airport was able to significantly expand the range of destinations on offer in terms of top value destinations. TUIfly launched six new direct services, to Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, Porto, Memmingen and Grenoble, all available from a starting price of 19.99 euros one way. Lufthansa added four new destinations: the plane with the golden bird now flies to Valencia, Bornholm, Corsica and the Lake Balaton region at the betterFly tariff of 99 euros return. Air Berlin has added Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Rimini to its Hamburg timetable.
In the past year, every fourth passenger from Hamburg Airport flew with a low-cost airline. In absolute figures this represents 3.4 million passengers, a growth of 18.9% over the previous year.

    Outlook for 2008
Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport, expects the positive development of the airport to continue in 2008. "Thanks to good growth figures and attractive long-haul routes, Hamburg Airport is being taken more seriously on an international level. Hamburg Airport has now climbed to 100th position on the list of the world's international airports. We will be continuing our efforts so as to progress further up the ladder. 2008 will bring with it a continuation of the upwards trend in passenger movements, albeit somewhat more moderate than in 2007. Hamburg Airport is basing its plans on 2 per cent growth. With the opening of the Air-port Plaza and the S-Bahn (suburban rail network) connection to downtown Hamburg, Hamburg Airport is well equipped to face the high demands of an international airport of the future."

Passengers also benefit from an attractive, growing route network for city trips, longer journeys, seaside holidays and business travel. Lufthansa has already announced its plans to add Ibiza, Reykjavik and Birmingham to its list of destinations served directly from Hamburg, whilst easyJet will be launching a service to Paris/Charles de Gaulle, Air Berlin will be flying from Hamburg to Corfu for the first time, TUIfly is adding Tel Aviv to its schedule, Luxair will be flying via Saarbrücken to Luxembourg, OLT to Erfurt and Centralwings to Krakow. The Canadian charter carrier, Air Transat, will be adding an extra flight to its Toronto service, link-ing Hamburg to the Canadian metropolis twice weekly from summer 2008.
